SPACEFEST – 2003
In the year 2003 Bangladesh Astronomical Association organizes a three-day
space festival dedicated to the discovery and first flight of the discovery
and first flight of the Aero-plane "Kitty Hawk" by Wright brothers. The
festival which was held on the Bangladesh University of Engineering and
Technology (BUET) playground on December 17, 19 and 20. SPACEFEST is a fairly
new concept in our culture. The word was first introduced to the public
when the Bangladesh Astronomical Association (BAA) organised 1st Bangladesh
Spacefest back in 1996. Spacefest-2003 attracted more crowds then the previous ones. Students of all ages enjoyed the exhibitions, flying demonstrations, competitions and plays that were part of the arrangement. In the festival there was Solar System, Lab for children's, Telescope, Old and new astronomical apparatus, Planetarium, Talami's sextant, sundial, star finder; celestial sphere (Kha Golok), stellar evaluation etc. A drama show, directed by Faiz Zahir of Arranyak Natyadal, titled 'Life Infinity' focusing the evolution of life merged with science. Another attraction of the festival was flying of remote control planes by amateurs, few of whom brought in different types of airplanes to exhibit their expertise. Paper plane-making competitions took place on the second and third day for college and university students. The prizewinner would be awarded with a return ticket to Singapore courtesy of Singapore Airlines. Seminars: "History behind the invention of Aero-plane "presented by Squadron Leader (Rtd.) Syed M Akhter, "Motorised Para-glider" presented by Yves Marre and "Ground Effect and Seaplanes" by Anders Korswing. Organised A quiz Contest for school and college students, base on this seminar. MAF Air Support Bangladesh LTD, Northern Foundation LTD and Air Parabat has sponsored a plane ride for the first 12 winners from tow groups of contestants. Sky Observation on every evening during the festival.
